Grand Canyon South Rim Recommendations

Boy did the Grand Canyon live up to our expectations! Neither of us had visited the Grand Canyon, but had heard that the views were out of this world.

Since we had brought our bikes, we found free dispersed camping, set up camp, and then biked into the Grand Canyon. Yes, you heard that right. We BIKED.

  • While researching, we found dispersed camping near Tusayan in Kaibab National Forest.

  • From there, the Grand Canyon Greenway Trail was only a mile or so up the road so we hopped on there and biked 6 miles up to Grand Canyon Village and the South Rim.

  • Grand Canyon Village had a couple spots to grab a bite to eat or if you go a mile further, you can catch a beautiful view! This was where we watched the sunset.

The following day was spent hopping around to a couple different trails on the South Rim. Here are our recommendations:

Bright Angel Trail

This trail is 12 miles round trip, so 6 miles down and 6 miles back up. It’s definitely one of the more popular trails, so keep in mind there will be quite a few people. We got there around 10am and hiked about a mile down before turning around. We knew the hike up would take a lot longer with it also getting warmer.

While the hike up was tough, it was a great hike with views that are OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Ooh Ahh Point

This was 5 miles east of Bright Angel Trail. We biked over to the start of the trail, but realized that to go further, we had to go on foot. So we decided to stop and take in the views. While it wasn’t too far from the Bright Angel Trail, it did bring a new view from a different angle.

We heard a lot of good things about this trail and viewpoints, so definitely take your time to walk down the trail!

Grandview Point

We decided to go down the road a little farther. Grandview Point was about 9 miles east of Ooh Ahh Point and had the grandest of the view! We were hungry so decided this was the perfect spot to make some wraps and enjoy the overlook. After eating, we made our way down the path to find the perfect rock to sit on and look out over the grand canyon.

While it was a quick day, it was filled with a lot of hiking and views that were like none other! We hope these three recommendations help you if you ever decide to go explore the Grand Canyon.
